Car Park Refurbishment, Sheffield Northern General Hospital
This project involved the full refurbishment of the top deck and the staircase to the lower level of a staff car park in the grounds of the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, covering an area of 1400 m². The existing anti-slip waterproof coating on the car park’s top deck was failing, allowing water ingress into the concrete substrate beneath, which, if left unaddressed, would cause significant damage to the car park’s structural integrity.

Full removal of the pre-existing coatings was required to allow repairs to the concrete substrate to be carried out before installing the waterproof, anti-slip coating. The WestWood Wecryl PMMA waterproofing system was installed. This cold-applied, fully reinforced system was chosen for its durability and anti-slip properties, with a proven track record in car park applications.
The existing coatings were removed using specialist surface preparation machinery to reveal the concrete substrate. Wecryl 821 penetrating primer was installed first to prevent the concrete from becoming porous, allowing the Wecryl 176 primer to be applied.
Concrete repairs were made using Wecryl 846. After this, the fully reinforced Wecryl 230 waterproofing layer was installed on the substrate and all upstands to provide the required waterproofing, followed by Wecryl 333 self-levelling mortar, which was fully blinded with quartz grit to provide the required anti-slip coating.
Once all the loose quartz was removed, the Wecryl 488 wearing coat was applied in the colours chosen by the client to highlight the roadways, parking bays, pathways, directional signage and crossings.
The Results
By installing the WestWood Wecryl PMMA waterproofing system on the concrete substrate, the client gained complete peace of mind that the structure would be protected for years to come. Providing a safe surface for cars to drive on whilst maintaining full control due to the slip resistance of the coating, and the same for pedestrians. The use of contrasting colours for the pedestrian footpaths, parking bays and roadways provides a safe environment for all users.
