This project involved the refurbishment of flat roof areas and gutters at the historic cultural venue, the Victoria Theatre, in Halifax. The existing asphalt roof areas required an upgrade in both thermal and waterproofing capabilities aswell as the gutter that runs around the top of the facade.

An overlay of the original failing asphalt roof was required, using a BUR system, to provide a thermal upgrade and long-lasting waterproofing. To meet the specified needs, the Centaur Centech PU waterproofing system was chosen: a cold-applied, 2-coat, fibreglass-reinforced, low-odour, moisture-curing system.

All substrates were pressure-treated to maximise bond strength between the surface and the insulation adhesive. Timber hard edges were installed around the perimeter of the insulation boards to act as a crush barrier to prevent damage to the edges of the insulated areas, and a carrier membrane was applied.

The Centaur Centech PU waterproofing system, fully reinforced with fibreglass, was installed, fully terminated into the upstands, with great attention to detail in moulding the system up the sandstone upstands and into the outlets to achieve a water-tight finish.

By combining the insulation with the Centaur Centech PU waterproofing system, a thermal and waterproofing upgrade to a failing roof on a Grade 2 listed building, due to the nature of polyurethane roof coatings and the self-cleaning properties, these are classed as temporary roofs, ideal for listed properties, as they are not seen as a permanent change to the building.
